Description

Cured by air moisture, one-package composition based on polyurethane varnish, containing micaceous iron oxide as an anticorrosion paint.

Destination and fields of applications

Anticorrosion protection of metalwork constructions, used in all atmospheric environments according to ISO 12944-5:2007. The coating is firm in sea and fresh water, in water solutions of acids, salts and alkalis (ðÍ= 2 - 12), in petroleum and petroleum products.
The composition is used in complex protection systems as:
  • an intermediate or a covering layer in the case of no or minor intensive effect of solar radiation;
  • an independent coating.

The sanitary-and-epidemiologic finding ¹ 66.01.10.231.Ï.002132.07.03 dated 01.07.2003.
Findings are given by , All-Russian Research Institute for Rail Transportation, Public Corporation «Giprotumenneftegaz», Research Institute for Lacquer Coatings with Experimental Machine-Building Plant «Viktoria», A. N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian-Vietnam Research and Technology center, Bashkir Research Institute for Petroleum.

Reccomended condition of the painted surface

The undercoat should be cleaned of dust, dirt and degreased.
When using the composition as an independent coating, it is necessary:
  • Oils, lubricants and other adipose matters as well as moisture and dust are to be removed from the metal surface;
  • Surface defects are to be removed (sharp edges, burrs, welding sparks ect.);
  • Thoroughly remove mill scale, rust and old paints traces by means of abrasive blusting method to Sa 2,5 – Sa 2 according to ISO 8501-1.
Mechanical cleaning to St 2 – St 3 according to ISO 8501-1 is permitted. The composition is to be applied on moistened but not wet surface.

Application method

  • The composition is to be thoroughly shuffled up to homogeneous state before using;
  • If necessary it is to be diluted by solvent to operating viscosity directly before using;
  • The composition can be applied in plant and field environment at temperature from -15 °Ñ to +40 °Ñ and relative air humidity from 30 % to 98 % (from 40% to 98% is the best).
When applied in plant environment at relative air humidity less than 30 %, applying the composition with drying accelerator for polyurethane paint-and-lacquer materials for decreasing drying time (in 2-4 times) is recommended when adjusted with the technologists of Fine Metal Powders Co.
Cure time of the undercoat before applying the composition FERROTAN at temperature (20+2) °Ñ and relative air humidity 65 % is for:
  • coating ZINOTAN – not less than 4 hours;
  • coating ZVES – not less than 6 hours;
  • coating FERROTAN-PRO – not less than 4 hours.
When applying multiple coatings, every next layer is to be applied after drying up of the previous one to «tackiness».
It is recommended to avoid long air contact of the composition in the container.
Drying up of the coating is natural. When air humidity increases, drying time of the coating decreases.
Cure time of the coating before using in immersion is 7 days.
Cure time of the coating quality FERROTAN before applying coating layers is not less than 24 hours.


Airless spraying
Recommended solvent SOLV-UR or the composition of Butyl Acetate and White Spirit mixed in proportion 1:1 by volume
Quantity of solvent less than 15 % by mass

Cleaning of the equipment SOLV-UR, aromatics (xylene, Solvesso 100) are used for rinsing painting equipment.

Packaging and storage

The composition FERROTAN is packed in 1.5 kilogram metal cans and 15 kilograms, 10 kilograms, 3 kilograms metal piles.
Storage conditions: the composition is to be stored in an enclosed warehouse at environment temperature from -40˚C till +40˚C. The container with the composition isn’t to be subjected to precipitation and direct sun rays effect.
Warranty period of the composition in the manufacturer’s hermetically covered container is 6 months from the composition due date.
